Recap
Three Americans and an Iranian represented the last four perfect players after six rounds: Nakamura, Niemann, GM
Fabiano Caruana
, and Movahed. After seven rounds, however, there was just one: Niemann and Nakamura made a draw, but Caruana defeated Movahed to reach 7/7. After 64 moves, Caruana was down an exchange... but had five, count 'em, pawns for it. He won soon after.
Caruana's lead and perfection didn't last, as he lost in the next round to Nakamura, who became sole leader after Niemann and Firouzja drew. If anyone was pressing for the win for most of the game it was Caruana, but the game suddenly turned near the end, and now the bounty for a perfect 11/11 score moves to an even $6,000 next week.
Nakamura was able to retain his lead for one more round despite struggling for much of his game against GM
Arjun Erigaisi
, before Arjun blundered the game back. Niemann, Caruana, and Firouzja were able to keep within a half-point of Nakamura by defeating Movahed, GM
Jan-Krzysztof Duda
, and GM
Minh Le
, respectively.
In the 10th-round encounter between Nakamura and Firouzja, Firouzja gradually began to take control around move 20 after an early mutual tactical hiccup, and he never let go from there on his way to taking the lead away from Nakamura.
At the same time, Caruana benefited from a sudden endgame turnaround to beat Niemann and keep up with Firouzja, setting up a final-round clash to determine the tournament winner. The last game proved somewhat anticlimactic, with Firouzja winning easily.
Nakamura defeated GM
Maxim Matlakov
to take sole second, while Niemann was able to move into third place with a win over IM
Aleksandr Usov
, and Caruana settled for fourth.
